8 CPA Bulletin > February 2023 www.cpa.uk.net ASSOCIATIONNEWS: 2 The CPA has been involved in industry efforts to help those affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Plant & Hire Aid Alliance consists of like-minded organisations in the construction plant sector who are acting together to support the humanitarian effort in Ukraine. Donations were made by CPA staff and by the Association itself to purchase 10 x 2.5kVA domestic generators which have been shipped fromWest Germany to the Ukrainian border. The generators will help ensure essential services in Ukraine can keep running. Following consecutive missile and drone attacks on critical civilian infrastructure of Ukraine, more than 30% of Ukraine’s power stations have been damaged or destroyed, leaving 12 million Ukrainians without electricity. With the onset of winter, and temperatures already plummeting to below zero in many parts of the country, the lack of electricity means heating is also of paramount concern. With support from additional donations from Rouse Services and Plantforce, the Plant & Hire Aid Alliance was able to purchase a total of 89 generators. The generators are being distributed through the Rotary International hubs in Uzhhorod and Vinnytsia who are using Rotary’s network of 69 clubs to get the equipment to those most in need. The generators were despatched at the same time as over 30,000 wrapped Christmas presents following the Plant & Hire Aid Alliance’s Ukraine Children’s Christmas Appeal which aimed to bring some joy to the thousands of children suffering in the ongoing war. The presents were all donated by member companies and other benefactors, and over half were wrapped by 170 volunteers working in a school in Ipswich over a weekend in November, including the CPA’s Technical and Development Manager Peter Brown and his partner. CPA President Brian Jones was also involved, travelling up and down the M6 delivering boxes and collecting for the wrappers. A convoy consisting of at least four fully loaded articulated trucks carrying 64 pallets of toys and 15 containers of clothing were sent to Kosice, Eastern Slovakia, before being distributed across Ukraine with the support of Rotary International and local volunteers.
