CPA Bulletin
POLICY: 2 www.cpa.uk.net CPA Bulletin > May 2019 37 Begin contingency planningand riskassessment Companies should consider contingency planning and risk assessment around what the impact a no-deal or hard Brexit might have on their day to day business operations. Understanding where the company is placed when working on projects and developments is vital. A no-deal Brexit might mean imported EU supplies and goods being held up by customs checks. This will impact on work schedules and project delivery in both the short and medium term. Be open and communicate effectively up and down the construction project supply chain In periods of uncertainty, open dialogue and communication are critical at all levels of projects, between contractors, sub-contractors, suppliers and clients. Identifying potential delays and concerns might not be immediately obvious. The UK’s exit from the EU might impact on companies in many unexpected ways. Only by being open with each other can these issues be identified and overcome. Make sure existing EU staff are aware of what they need to do to stay in the UK CPA members are already experiencing skills shortages and our departure from the EU may well impact further on the availability of labour. We are calling for companies to take every step to ensure their EU staff are aware of the actions they need to take to apply under the EU Settlement Scheme for both themselves and their families. Currently under the Withdrawal Agreement, EU staff and their family members who have lived in the EU for at least five years (up to and including 31 December 2020) are able to apply for UK Settled Status. If they have been here for less than five years, they can apply for Pre-Settled Status, until they meet the full criteria. The scheme opened on 30 March 2019. We advise companies to assess how many EU staff are likely to be affected and check whether their staff intend to remain in the UK and for how long.
