Protecting Depots and Offices Secured by Design (SBD) is the national police crime prevention initiative, which has 30 years’ experience and expertise in improving the physical security of buildings. SBD have collated their knowledge into a series of helpful guides to deter and reduce crime, including one on commercial premises called ‘Commercial Developments 2015’. To view this publication, go to https:// www.securedbydesign.com/images/ downloads/SBD_Commercial_2015_V2.pdf It highlights certain types of product and their specification. For premises in high risk areas, suggested protective measures include: • Perimeter fencing up to 2.4 metres. This allows clear views of the commercial premises and grounds from outside the site. • Fixed or rising bollards to prevent a ram-raid type attack. Other suggestions are the placing of substantial (concrete or similar) planting boxes (for green-fingered members) or raised kerbs. • Shutters and grilles to both internal and external doors and windows. SBD have accredited a wide range of security-related products, which are sufficiently robust, that meet the Police Preferred Specification standard. Before members invest in any new security systems, or update existing ones, it is recommended that you consult a Designing Out Crime Officer (DOCO). DOCO’s are based in police forces and specialise in designing out crime. They will be able to advise on the most suitable type of SBD accredited product and its specification depending on such factors as your location and the level of risk. To locate your nearest DOCO, go to https://www.securedbydesign.com/ contact-us/national-network-of-designing- out-crime-officers?view=article&id=308 If you wish to learn more about other SBD accredited products, these can be found within the Member’s Section of the SBD website at https://www.securedbydesign.com
