As expected there were a number of questions put to Ian particularly relating to the issue of ballast dust and there was a lively and helpful exchange of views. Points raised included the delivery of ballast to site and ways that dust could be removed prior to delivery, as well as systems introduced at the point of delivery to reduce the problem. The main area for debate however was the requirement to provide pressurised cabs on new on-track plant, something that is being looked at carefully at the present time. It was agreed that more research was needed. There were also behavioural issues such as when a plant operator wishes to get out of his cab and the potential contamination from doing so. Following the lengthy discussion on the issues relating to ballast dust, another controversial topic was also aired, being the recently announced changes to network routes and regions. This is an issue that has a long way to go before we know what the impact will be on our members but it provided us with an interesting topic to discuss over lunch. Ian was thanked for providing his insight to the members and he promised to keep us up to date with developments. To all those who took the time out to come and join us at the AGM it was good to meet with you and I hope the effort was rewarded. To those members not able to join us at what has become a useful event for both improving our knowledge as well as networking, please make a diary note to join us next year. The Rail Plant Association exists only to serve its members, so any member who was unable to attend the meeting but has a concern that they believe we could help with need only contact the office and we will do all we can.
