CPA Bulletin

www.cpa.uk.net CPA Bulletin > May 2020 9 ASSOCIATIONNEWS: 2 I worked for Tim for the first 11 years of my career and he was a great leader and teacher. Even after this he continued to give his guidance through his works with the CPA. My career is founded on his guidance and I will miss him deeply. Jason Fairall Very sad news and a huge loss. Timwas a gentleman and so well respected and dedicated to improving safety of the plant hire industry. A true expert on lifting. Always approachable and had time for everyone. Sincere condolences to his family. Paul Taylor Very sad news and condolences to Tim’s wife and family. Tim had immense knowledge of every type of plant, every code of practice and standard - a lot of which he had a major input in creating. He drafted many Technical Information Notes which the CPA made available free of charge. These have been used to improve safety all over the world. He also knew the difficulties of running a business and would listen to members of the many Interest groups he served on. He will be extremely hard to replace and I will miss his calm approach and advice. Trevor Jepson He will be missed both professionally and personally by many of us. He was a modest genius within the construction industry, a true friend and colleague for the past 30 years. My deepest condolences to his family. Ken Turner Timwas a true gentleman who always listened to his colleagues. His knowledge was so extensive he became Mr CPA in respect to engineering matters. I personally will miss Tim as a dedicated member of the CPA and prior to this during his time with Laing’s. A sad day for the access and lifting industries and all who knew him. Sincere condolences to his family. Dermot O’Neill My greater loss is that of losing a good friend. I have spent many hours with Tim, particularly at some of the lengthy and arduous Good Practice Guides and EU standards that we have both been involved in over the past 25 years. Gordon Gedling I have had the pleasure of working alongside Tim for many years now. He has always been an active member of CHIG and many other groups, not to mention committees. His sense of calm and sensible approach to numerous issues offered CHIG many opportunities to learn and grow. He has been instrumental in the development of our group, working tirelessly on guidance and updates. I have always admired Tim’s dedication and even to the end, he kept working as long as he was able and remained upbeat about his illness. He was very touched by the card sent by CHIG from our October meeting and had hoped he would be joining us at the meetings again one day, it saddens me to know that such an industry giant has been taken from us so soon. On a personal level he has always been a gentleman, a wonderful mentor and a dear friend, I will miss him immensely. I’m sure you will all join in expressing our condolences to his wife Judy and his family at this sad time, and I hope they can take comfort knowing howmuch respect he received from not only CHIG members but the hoist industry worldwide. The world is a dark place at the moment and even more so now that Tim’s laughter and light have been taken. Kirsty Archbold-Laming Tim Watson Memorial Prize In order to commemorate Tim’s contribution to the industry, CPA is establishing the TimWatson Memorial Prize. Full details are being developed at time of writing, but it is likely to take the form of an annual award, to support the work of young engineers involved in construction plant. A small panel of Tim’s colleagues will oversee the development of the Memorial Prize, and we hope to publish more information in the next issue of the CPA Bulletin. The Health and Safety Executive would like to extend sincere condolences to all of Tim’s family, friends and colleagues. Many of us enjoyed a close working relationship with Tim over the years and this is a sad loss to us personally as well as to the wider industry. Tim was a true professional in his dedication to securing improvements in the plant sector and a real gentleman in the way he went about it. His ability to find common ground amongst a disparate group of industry representatives, whilst focusing on securing the most advantageous outcome, was unsurpassed. Coupled with his cheerful demeanour, this helped us all to come together and focus on the common good. Tim will be missed by us all. Brent Bolton
