www.cpa.uk.net CPA Bulletin > May 2022 25 PLANT THEFT PLANT THEFT The government has announced the Online Safety Bill, which when implemented into legislation, will require online companies to address any issues concerning the content on their respective platforms. The three main points the Bill sets out to do are: • prevent the spread of illegal content and activity such as images of child abuse, terrorist material and hate crimes, including racist abuse • protect children from harmful material • protect adults from legal - but harmful - content It has been presented that the Bill will help prevent paid-for fraudulent adverts appearing on these platforms, which will make it harder for fraudsters to swindle victims. The planned legislation will also include fines for companies that do not comply with their obligations, which can be either up to a maximum of £18m or 10% of the company’s global turnover - whichever is the higher. No details have been published when this will come into force, but it is expected to be no later than the Autumn. GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES ONLINE SAFETY BILL Home Office Meeting - Tool Theft A meeting is being arranged with representatives from the Home Office, together with industry stakeholders and the Police, to discuss the significant rise in tool theft from vans, and how it can be best tackled. Further details on the subject will be covered in future editions. Cyber Security Event The Combined Industries Theft Solutions (CITS) is organising a cyber security seminar on 22nd June 2022 , at Coutts Bank, London. Details of the event will be found on the CITS website at www.cits.uk.com ACE Opal - Six Month Report The ACE Opal police unit has recently published its first six monthly report on the progress with Serious, Organised and Acquisitive Crime. A copy of the report can be found on the CPA website at www.cpa.uk.net/legal-insurance-plant- theft/plant-theft On 5th January, Bullen Plant reported an attempted fraud by an individual called ‘John’ from JA Prescott. He used the mobile number 07448 281935 . On 31st January, Weaver Plant had a Kubota K027-4 mini-excavator stolen. On 9th February, Sahara (Melksham) Ltd had a Takeuchi TB-228 mini-excavator stolen in Melksham, Wiltshire. On 12th February, AnR Specialists had a Hi-ab Ifor Williams trailer stolen in Swansea. On 15th February, Advanced Access Platforms had a Hinowa 17m spider-boom stolen in Lewisham, London. On 1st March, Kelter Plant had hired a JCB 4m telehandler, Kubota U-17 mini-excavator and Doosan 8 tonne DX80R to Stevie Browns of Browns Groundworks, 23 Warwick Drive Padiham, Burnley. The number given was 07554 860851 . The machines are missing, and calls are unanswered. All notifications of theft and fraud are forwarded to the ACE Opal and NaVCIS teams.
