Communicate, be open, be honest and don’t let anything drift. I may have been in the impossible position of closing our family business 14 years ago, but thanks to having done it, I got to create the GLAS method and framework. Not only that, but I got to use it in my life and business which has consequently allowed me to help thousands of other individuals and businesses get their stuff together and build amazing futures. When in our business as CEO, I remember feeling alone and thinking that the crazy things that went on in our business and family only happened to us - how wrong I was. 90% of all enterprises are family businesses, ranging from ‘Ma and Pa’ stores to the likes of Walmart and Tata. Specifically, within the plant hire sector, the largest businesses are also family owned; JCB and Bibby Line Group both remain family enterprises - in Bibby’s case dating back to 1807. I promise you that they face all the same things you do - from ‘the delinquent’ to ‘the diva’, and from ‘the egomaniac’ to ‘the wilting wallflower’. What they have done however, is many of the things mentioned in this piece - starting with knowing where to put the pin! To summarise: 1.The greatest investment you can make in your business is in you and those around you. 2.Family and owner-managed businesses must deal with BROWN-STUFF SQUARED. 3.Open and honest communication and expectations are vital - whether you like it or not! 4.Family and owner-managed businesses are magical when they get it right, and stay aligned. 5.Everything is, has, and will always, continue to change - and so must you.
