www.cpa.uk.net CPA Bulletin > August 2018 23 PLANT THEFT PLANT THEFT: 1 Impersonations RichardWalker - RDF Building Ltd ‘Richard’ had filled out an accounts form and provided details of his ‘hired-in’ plant insurance, which were all correct. The only thing that caught him out was a Gmail email address and the fact he had only taken his insurance cover out on the hire date. Martin Treanor - Cruden Construction He rang using the number 07856 014805. The email address he gave was: mtreanorcruden@gmail.com - he advised us to use this email address, as the usual one was down at the moment. We checked with the Cruden Construction Ltd, and they confirmed ‘Martin Treanor’ is not employed by Cruden Construction Ltd. ‘John’ - Purchasingmachinery - Irish VAT Number ‘John’ called using the number 078535 78785 to negotiate purchasing an itemof plant. He was told that we would require his VAT details etc. He sent over VAT details for a Mr Edmund Lavin who is based in County Mayo, Ireland. Edmund was contacted directly and stated that someone had been using his VAT number to buy plant and vans across England. Company: Falconer Contracts, Clydebank A copy of a driver’s licence, amongst other items, was provided as identification, and we were able to confirm that insurance was held by Falconer. Company papers which were provided looked legitimate. Falconer placed an order for various items of plant, and these were delivered to site. The following week, it was discovered that the plant had been moved to the other side of the city and the plant’s stickers had all been removed. The police are involved and in the process of recovering the plant. Scam Methods: Invoices An individual arrived at a Hirer’s site claiming to be from the Plant Owner. “Outstanding” hire invoices were produced by this individual with demands for immediate payment. The inference was that the Plant may be taken away if the invoices were not paid. Site Inspections Individuals claiming to be from the Plant Owner arrive at a Hirer’s site to carry out service/maintenance on the Plant. Instead, they were trying to ascertain what security measures the machine had, - so that any security which was fitted could be disabled -, and the Plant stolen at another time.
