Patrick is very active in bringing new people into the industry, has supported work on developing apprenticeships, and is a champion of all aspects of training and skills development. Patrick was followed by Campbell Howie, who was a previous CPA National Star of the Future winner. Before introducing Campbell, Kevin Minton read what Campbell’s former employer had said about him. Campbell’s former employer is CallumMackintosh, the Managing Director of HHH Equipment Ltd in Inverness, and also Vice President of the Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA). Callum said: “Having regularly used Campbell’s services over the last 12 months and also recently awarded him a service contract covering the south of Scotland, I can attest that he truly is an excellent example of the kind of young talent our industry should be embracing. Campbell is hard-working, meticulous, proficient and always excited for a challenge! The progress and path he has chosen since completing his apprenticeship is proof that with hard work and passion you will prosper. Campbell is an inspiration and will, without any doubt in my mind, continue to go further within our industry.” In his presentation Campbell spoke about his journey fromwinning the Star of the Future award just two years ago in 2017, up until the present day whereby he now runs his own construction plant repair business in Ayrshire, Scotland. Following Campbell’s presentation, the awards presentation began and the nominees and winners were announced by CPA Training and Safety Manager Rob Squires. There were a total of 21 college awards for both NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 plant mechanic apprentices, as nominated by colleges nationwide delivering plant mechanic apprentice training. Apprentices were assessed throughout the academic year on their work in college and in their work environment. There were also three employer nominated awards for plant mechanic apprentices at NVQ Level 2 and 3 respectively, plus two national winners and the two new awards for plant operators and lifting technicians. My current specialism is in ‘piling rigs’ and my ambition is to master my trade of plant mechanics and gain as much knowledge as I possibly gain before progressing into management and helping drive the industry forward.” National Level 3 winner AdamDalton from National Construction College East and employed by Toppesfield Ltd said: “I’m really happy to win the national award. I feel I’ve been able to thrive in the apprentice format as it applauds the ethics of hard work, competence and self-motivation and I was very pleased to receive a Distinction at NVQ Level 2. I’m hoping to become a Senior Fitter and eventually move into management.” The two national winners received Snap-on roll cart tool kits and the 21 regional winners won Snap-on student tool kits. Also in contention for the prestigious Level 2 national award were Lea Poole from Lifterz and AskhamBryan College, Tyler Pearson from Wirtgen and National Construction College East, Lewis Scott from Liebherr and NSCG Stafford College and Stuart Arkell fromGrant Plant Maidenhead and Wiltshire College. For the national Level 3 award, AdamDavies fromMolson Equipment Services and Wiltshire College was Highly Commended and won a Snap-on torque wrench.
