Located 10minutes fromM4, M5, M49 and M32 junctions, the depot will extend the hirer’s reach into South, West and MidWales, as well asWorcester, Gloucester, Swindon and surrounding areas in the SouthWest. Director, Patrick Flannery explained: “It is really important to us that we can support our national contracts at a local level. Investing in a permanent base ensures that we can deliver the high standard of service our clients expect. It also supports our expectation to have delivery capability to 96% of the UKmainland within two hours. The 12 members of staff are appropriately accredited hire professionals, working with operators who are fully inducted by our training department - ready to deliver whatever the job requirements.” The site has two acres of hardstanding with a further acre that is set to be developed as a specialist training facility. Leading the operator training is one of Flannery’s in-house CPCS trainers whose role is to undertake competency checks and familiarisation training on day one of an operator’s engagement. They then provide ongoing technical support throughout operators’ placements. The new depot is committed to recruiting five apprentices this year. Patrick explained: “Aside from the investment in facilities and equipment we are absolutely committed to inspiring, recruiting and most importantly retaining the next generation of plant operators and mechanics. If anyone in the Newport area is looking for a career change or knows someone who is willing to learn then they should contact us, a career in construction as part of the Flannery team awaits them.” Go Plant Fleet Services is ramping up its fleet of heavy-duty road sweepers for operated work onmotorways and trunk roads. The firm is set to take delivery of 37 brand new Johnston VT802 and VM652 18-tonne machines in a deal worth more than £5.5 million. The new road sweepers are built specifically for work on large infrastructure projects so they’re ideal for the kind of operated hire contracts that Go Plant Fleet Services specialises in, particularly those in the construction or maintenance of motorways and arterial routes. In another development, Go Plant Fleet Services has now put more than 200 of its drivers through the Highways England Passport scheme. And it has revealed plans to ensure every one of its 400-plus operators around the UK hold the qualification by 2020. Health and Safety manager AdamWilson said: “The Passport scheme sets a common safety standard for more than 50,000 workers across the entire Highways England supply chain. We were quick to get on board with the initiative and more of our contracting drivers have reached the required standard than any other specialist vehicle provider. “The fact that over 200 of our drivers have secured Highways England Passports in a short period of time is a magnificent effort and a real indication of our commitment to these requirements and to compliance and safety in general. While some may not always have the opportunity to work on Highways England projects we see a value in putting our drivers through this. It’s a strong course and working to these high standards means their skills can be transferred to other projects requiring exacting safety standards. As a company, we recognise the value of our staff being the experts in their field so that we’re fully prepared for larger contracting projects,” he continued. The scheme simplifies access to Highways England construction sites through the issue of a personalised smart card which provides proof of competency, qualification and fitness to work. Passports, which can last for five years, are issued to those who pass an external one-day ‘Common Induction’ course, delivered by training body Lantra.
