NEWS FROMCPA MEMBERS: 5 www.cpa.uk.net CPA Bulletin > August 2019 39 Go Plant Fleet Services is carrying out an initiative that could lead to the long-term replacement of diesel across its fleet of more than 400 vehicles - and a significant reduction in local emissions. The company is trialling Gas to Liquid Shell GTL fuel for its fleet of road sweepers. The announcement of the trials coincided with National Clean Air Day, the largest air pollution campaign in the UK, in June. Phil Quelch, National Fleet Engineering Director at Go Plant Fleet Services, said: “As one of the leading providers of specialist commercial vehicles in the UK, we’re acutely aware of our responsibility to the environment. The search for alternative fuels and the requirements of emission standards being introduced in towns and cities across the country pose a major challenge to the industry. “But we’re leading the way in the quest for a viable and long-term solution and have been looking into this area for quite some time. If the industry was to wait around for new technology to become available, that would take a lot of time. But Shell GTL fuel is a drop-in alternative that has an immediate effect in reducing emissions and improving local air quality without engine modification - and we believe it could be the way to go,” he continued. Trials are taking place in London and Birmingham over a six-month period. Two heavy duty Johnston 651 and 652 sweepers are being fitted with special telematics devices to capture data relating to aspects including air quality, noise pollution, performance and economy. The results of using diesel and Shell GTL fuel in both the main and auxiliary engines will be collected during the process to form the basis of a comparison analysis. Phil Quelch added: “We’ve looked in depth at the potential of electric and hydrogen vehicles, but the truth is neither the technology nor the infrastructure is really there yet for heavy duty road sweepers. We wanted to do something that’s viable now and these trials will help us to decide if an alternative fuel is the solution.” Previous independent trials have shown that Shell GTL fuel, exclusively supplied to the UK by Certas Energy, can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 37 per cent and particulate matter by up to 90 per cent compared to conventional diesel. Central to these renovations are the installation of the brand new range of Hatz Stage V compliant engines. The long-term intention is to implement a similar programme for the entire PCP fleet. EU Stage V regulations bring forward a demand to reduce Particulate Matter (PM) alongside extended control of both PM and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions. Premier Concrete Pumping Limited supplies a wide range of concrete pumps, agitators, grout mixers and associated equipment. The company operates from three fully equipped depots with nine field service vans strategically placed to provide a nationwide service. Premier Concrete Pumping Rebuilds with Hatz Professional Plant Services has completed the design and development of a brand new restricted access piling rig, powered by a Hatz 4H50TIC Silent Pack water-cooled, low-emission, diesel engine. Entitled the Warrior, this brand new piece of machinery has been specifically designed by Professional Plant Services engineers for piling in basements or for underpinning in confined areas. The rig is fully remote controlled and is driven by a Hatz 4H50TIC Silent Pack water-cooled diesel engine. The project was completed over a twelve-week period and the Warrior is available from the Professional Plant Services rental fleet or to purchase outright. Commenting on this latest innovation, Karl Dunstan, Managing Director, Professional Plant Services said: “We have utilised our many years of experience in the piling and foundation industry to bring together a model that has all the features and benefits needed to deliver low emission, safe and efficient drilling in confined areas.“ Pro Plant’sWarrior Ready
