FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE www.cpa.uk.net CPA Bulletin > August 2019 5 HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS... June was a goodmonth for apprentices in our sector. This year’s Stars of the Future awards event was themost successful yet. There were over 300 people at the event, a previous winner returning to encourage andmotivate the audience, new award categories, andmany happy winners of prizes including tool chests, training courses, factory trips and the chance to drive the biggest dozer in the UK. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to all the sponsors. You can read the full story on page 16 . In the same week we heard the very welcome news that the new apprenticeship for construction plant mechanics had been approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE). Over three years ago CPA Members realised that employers and trainees in the sector needed an apprenticeship that was tailored to the special needs of construction plant, which would not be compromised by being grafted into another industry’s field. This latest arrival completes the initial set of four apprenticeship routes of entry: operator, lifting technician, mechanic and hire controller. If someone wants to work on or with construction plant, whether it be on site, in the workshop, or in the office, we have an apprenticeship, thanks to the commitment of the Members and others who have put the work into their development. However, there is still work to do, and emphasis is now starting to move towards getting training and awarding bodies in place. You can read more about this on page 41.
