22 CPA Bulletin > August 2022 www.cpa.uk.net The Red Diesel Replacement competition is a government-funded £40mscheme supporting the development and demonstration of low-carbon technologies, infrastructure and fuels to help industry move away fromusing red diesel. Red diesel use accounts for 15% of total diesel for the UK. Following the removal of the entitlement to use red diesel from construction and other sectors in April, BEIS launched the Red Diesel Replacement competition to provide grant funding to support the development and demonstration of innovative technologies to help decarbonise the construction, mining and quarrying sectors that will be most impacted by the removal of the red diesel rebate. In late May, BEIS announced funding of over £6.6 million to help industry move away from using red diesel. The funding supports development of red diesel alternatives, such as e-fuels and green hydrogen, as well as technologies which capture and store energy that would ordinarily be wasted from a vehicle or machine so it can be used instead. Some of the innovative projects receiving funding include: Gen-ZE: Fuel Cell Generator Lead Partner: Bramble Energy Within the Gen-ZE project Bramble Energy will develop, test and trial a ruggedised, portable hydrogen fuel cell generator demonstrating a zero-emission solution to replace diesel generators targeted for the construction sector. Bramble’s printed circuit board fuel cell (PCBFC) technology offers cost advantages over conventional fuel cells, and the simplified, robust design using PCBs will be demonstrated to meet the construction sectors needs for zero-emission portable power generation. Hybrid Gas Engine HE Lead Partner: CAGE Technologies Limited HGE (Hybrid Gas Engine) is a project that will develop a multi-gas engine technology that enables the same engine to run on conventional gas fuels or hydrogen, or a mixture of gas fuels with no fundamental change to the engine. This enables a smooth transition to net zero power by enabling users to purchase a net zero compliant technology now, yet operate it on conventional clean fuels whilst the hydrogen supply chain is developed. NRMM to Net Zero using Flywheel and Battery Storage with H2 ICE Lead Partner: PUNCH Flybrid Limited PUNCH Flybrid will deliver a high power electrically driven flywheel energy storage system coupled with a battery energy storage systemwith support from eMotor partner EMPEL Systems whilst PUNCH Hydrocells will develop a new hydrogen internal combustion engine for NRMM duty cycles. The project will target a significant improvement in NRMM efficiency using the high-power energy storage technology whilst the integration with battery and H2 ICE will provide a longer-term route to zero emissions NRMM.
