24 CPA Bulletin > August 2023 www.cpa.uk.net In the digital age, technological advancements are reshaping sectors, including the plant hire industry. One crucial aspect that requires attention is the management and accessibility of key on-site documentation such as certificates. Traditional systems like paper records and clunky digital platforms can lead to efficiency losses and potential security risks. The industry’s progression towards more robust, user-friendly digital solutions is evident. A practical manifestation of this evolution is CapjaDocs, a software developed by Capja Limited, as a QR point-of-reference, aimed at streamlining document accessibility in the field. Practical examples from the field clearly illustrate the value of CapjaDocs. Take, for instance, the case of McGovern Crane Hire. They utilise CapjaDocs to generate secure QR codes on their operator ID cards. These QR codes, protected by passwords, link to a portal containing vital information such as medical records and training qualifications, enhancing both security and accessibility. They also use the same method for their fleet, with the ID card being easy to transport and pass between personnel. Kieran McGovern of McGovern Crane Hire said: “The impact of CapjaDocs on our business has been substantial. By using secure QR codes on our ID cards, we’ve managed to offer immediate access to essential documents while maintaining the utmost security. It’s a game-changer for the crane hire industry.” City Lifting, on the other hand, applies CapjaDocs in a slightly different manner. They affix QR codes to keyrings of their fleet and the inside of their cab windows. These codes grant immediate access to up-to-date LOLER certificates, eliminating the delay and hassle of traditional document delivery methods. Charlotte Jepson of City Lifting added: “Using the QR code has saved us a lot of the unnecessary time it used to take to manage a paper based certificate system for our 70 strong mobile fleet. For our customers, using the QR system means the machine and tackle certificates that are required on site are readily available at the click of a button at any point during the day without any delays to the lifting operation. “The online portal not only allows us to efficiently replace the expiring certificates digitally which saves paper, but also shows Emerging Digital Challenges and Innovations in the Plant Hire Industry GUEST ARTICLE: 1 A Closer Look at the QR Craze by Josh Wallman, Co-Founder and Director, Capja
