There was far more than can be absorbed in a single visit (nor should you try), but the experience and appreciation of such large-scale heavy manufacturing will last a lifetime. Each of us that visited took something different from the experience. “I’ve personally gained a new-found appreciation for the designers having to tailor axle loadings (particularly for the heavy crane market) to some of the lowest of national and provincial road legal limits. I believe we are somewhat spoiled in the UK at over 16t per axle loading on most major roads. In all, an incredible day not just for me but more importantly, for the two Stars of the Future winners, increasing their own understanding of crane manufacturing and leaving an indelible mark on their future careers.” Arran Willis of Liebherr GB commented: “A first visit to Liebherr-Werk Ehingen is overwhelming for even the most seasoned veterans of the lifting industry. Despite this, the group delved into everything on offer, from the smallest LTM1030-2.1 telescopic crane to the largest LR13000 crawler crane. As a special highlight, we were able to gain access to the newly launched LR12500-1.0 crawler crane, which created more than a trivial amount of excitement for our Stars. It’s not every day that you’re able to sit at the controls of a 2500 ton capacity crane. “Liebherr is deeply rooted in the local communities, so during the evenings the teamwas immersed into Ehingen itself, being the beer culture capital of Swabia. This immersion led to a deeper understanding of the core values that Liebherr brings through from the communities to the factories, and why the factory visit is only a part of the agenda for the visit.” Arran added: “Luke and Steve showed outstanding professionalism, testament to the development provided by their mentors and Wolffkran on their journey so far and by the time we said our goodbyes, it was clear that they understood the bigger picture of what the prize was really about, and there could be no doubt they’d grown on a personal level in just a few days. “They will take the experience with them for years to come, a worthwhile investment for our industry by any measure. Seeing the Stars of the Future embrace every aspect of the trip, be it crane technology or new foods, affirms their dedication and adaptability to the wider world. There’s no doubt their personal development will lead them and others into a bright future.” Kevin Minton, CPA Chief Executive said: “We are grateful to Liebherr GB, as well as the other prize sponsors for the other categories, for providing this fantastic prize for the Stars of the Future winners. It not only recognises their personal achievements but provides a greater understanding of cranes and lifting equipment technology and aids their journey to becoming the leaders of our industry in the future, fully validating the whole ethos of why we set up Stars of the Future some 10 years ago.” Nominations for the Stars of the Future 2023 awards programme open on 1st January 2023 and nominations forms can be downloaded from https:// www.cpa.uk.net/skills- training/stars-of-the-future.
