TRAINING: 1 Askham Bryan College near York has become the first provider to run a training programme for the new Level 2 Hire Controller (Plant, Tool and Equipment) Trailblazer Apprenticeship. The first course commenced in early October and apprentices from CPA Members AFI Uplift, Banner Plant, Flannery Plant Hire and TCA Lifting formed the inaugural cohort, becoming the very first group to undertake training for this apprenticeship. The apprenticeship standard was developed by a CPA-led group of industry experts and ensures that apprentices will, on completion of their apprenticeship, be equipped with the latest skills, knowledge and behaviours required by the modern plant-hire sector. To aid the training programme, Askham Bryan College has formed a partnership with CPA Member Point of Rental Ltd to further enhance the training apprentices receive by donating their hire desk software system to the college and have also developed a dedicated training database to enable realistic training scenarios to be simulated by the apprentices. Access to the software and the database will ensure that apprentices receive thorough training and become familiarised with typical software used by a large portion of the hire industry. Additionally, Point of Rental is providing training to the Askham Bryan delivery team to ensure they are fully conversant with the system functions and capabilities. Peter Chapman, Course Manager and Lecturer in Construction Plant Management said: “The support provided by Point of Rental in donating their Syrinx software and their work in developing a fully-functioning plant hire database will enable us to simulate situations that apprentice hire controllers will encounter in the workplace. It also demonstrates Point of Rental’s commitment to supporting the training requirements of the plant hire industry and its employers.” Point of Rental’s Outside Sales Manager Les Bunce commented: “We’re excited to be able to empower students at Askham Bryan by enhancing their ability to access resources used in the industry.” Askham Bryan College has other start dates for hire controller apprentices planned throughout 2019-20 and the CPA is engaging with other training providers to ensure national coverage for this and other trailblazer apprenticeships. A requirement of the submission for any trailblazer apprenticeship is that is has the full support of employers and that there is need for the occupation which requires at least 12months of rigorous and substantial training. To garner support from other sectors to ensure that the occupation is wide-ranging, backing is being obtained from both Crane Interest Group (CIG) and Tower Crane Interest Group (TCIG) members from which an exploratory meeting, to determine the need and scope as well as forming a working group, is to be held on 3rd December 2019 in Solihull. Interested parties can contact Peter Brown at peter@cpa.uk.net if they would like to be involved with this project. Requests for Construction Plant Installer Apprenticeship TRAINING
